The Cheapest Domain Extensions to Keep for 10 Years
The cheapest domain to register is rarely the cheapest domain to keep. A .bond name costs $1.34 for its first year and $144.98 over ten years. A .com costs $11.08 for its first year and $110.80 over ten. If you are naming something you plan to keep, the number to compare is the total over the years you will own it.
Every figure below is one registrar's public list price (Porkbun's pricing API, snapshot of September 27, 2026): the first year plus nine renewals, in USD. Other registrars charge different amounts, and prices change, so treat this as a guide to the shape of the market rather than a quote. The full table for 530 extensions is on our domain renewal prices page.
The popular extensions, ranked by ten-year cost
| Extension | First year | Renewal | Ten years |
|---|---|---|---|
| .us | $4.43 | $7.00 | $67.43 |
| .cc | $3.40 | $8.55 | $80.35 |
| .com | $11.08 | $11.08 | $110.80 |
| .org | $7.98 | $11.84 | $114.54 |
| .dev | $8.75 | $12.87 | $124.58 |
| .net | $12.52 | $12.52 | $125.20 |
| .xyz | $2.04 | $14.21 | $129.93 |
| .app | $8.75 | $14.93 | $143.12 |
| .me | $17.27 | $17.27 | $172.70 |
| .io | $28.12 | $51.80 | $494.32 |
| .ai | $82.70 | $82.70 | $827.00 |
A few things stand out. .com is the cheapest to keep of the extensions most founders actually choose between, and it costs the same every year. .us and .cc come out lower, but .us is only open to people and organisations with a real connection to the United States. At the other end, .io costs more than four times as much as .com over ten years, and .ai more than seven times (it registers and renews in two-year terms).
The cheapest first years are not the cheapest to keep
The extensions with the lowest first-year price in this snapshot all renew far higher (30 extensions share the $1.54 first-year price; the table shows the ones among them that cost the most to keep):
| Extension | First year | Renewal | Ten years |
|---|---|---|---|
| .bond | $1.34 | $15.96 | $144.98 |
| .baby | $1.54 | $52.01 | $469.63 |
| .courses | $1.54 | $31.41 | $284.23 |
| .beer | $1.54 | $26.26 | $237.88 |
| .cfd | $1.54 | $15.96 | $145.18 |
A $1.54 .baby name costs $469.63 over ten years, close to a .io ($494.32) and more than four times a .com. The promotion buys you the first year; the renewal is what you pay for the other nine.
Across all 530 extensions
Outside the popular list, the cheapest to keep in this snapshot are .de ($39.53 over ten years), .top ($43.30), .vip ($50.47) and .uk ($55.26). Country codes can come with their own registration rules, so check them before you build a brand on one.
How to choose with the long run in mind
- Compare ten-year cost, not first-year price. For a name you will build on, ten years is a modest horizon.
- Prefer flat-priced extensions when the name works there. In this snapshot .com, .net, .ai, .me and .gg cost the same every year.
- Read the rules for country codes. Some require a local presence or a local contact.
- Check your own registrar. These are one registrar's list prices; yours may differ.
Every NameSale listing shows a one-time price that includes the first year of registration (the first two years for .ai, which registers in two-year terms), plus an estimate of that extension's yearly renewal, so you can compare the long-run cost before you buy.
