What Makes a Good Domain Name? 9 Signals That Actually Matter
Updated October 3, 2026
There is no formula, but there are signals. Here are the nine that consistently predict whether a domain will be remembered, typed correctly, and still fit the business in five years.
1. Length — under 12 characters
Every extra character is friction. Above 12 you start losing memorability and shareability. Below 4, nearly every .com is already registered, so you would be buying from an owner at the owner's price.
Sweet spot for new brands: 6-10 characters.
2. TLD — .com still wins
.com is by far the largest extension and the default a person types when guessing a URL. .ai for AI products and .io for tools are the credible alternatives for a real brand.
New TLDs (.xyz, .online, .store) are cheaper and fine for projects, but expect to constantly clarify the spelling.
3. Pronounceability
The "radio test": say the name out loud once. If a stranger can spell it from sound alone, it passes. Made-up names that follow English phonetics (Spotify, Klarna) work. Random consonant clusters don't.
4. No hyphens, no numbers
Hyphens get lost in conversation ("is that with a dash?"). Numbers create ambiguity ("4" vs "four"). Both make a name harder to pass on by word of mouth, and both put off buyers if you ever sell it.
5. Brandability vs. exact-match keyword
Exact-match (buyshoesonline.com) used to win SEO. Today, brandable names (Allbirds, Stripe) win because Google ranks brands and EMD signals are diluted.
Unless the site will live on search traffic for that exact phrase, prefer brandable.
6. Trademark headroom
Run the candidate through the USPTO trademark database and a global Google search. If a registered mark exists in your category, walk away — it doesn't matter how perfect the name is.
7. Social handle availability
Check Instagram, X, TikTok, LinkedIn before buying. A domain whose handles are all taken is half a brand.
8. Future-proofing
Avoid names that lock you into a single product or trend. "BestNFTMarket.com" was great in 2021 and tragic in 2024. Aim for category-agnostic words.
9. The gut test
Send the top 3 candidates to ten people you trust. Ask: "Which one would you remember tomorrow?" Whichever wins, buy it.
Frequently asked questions
Is .com still better than .io or .ai?
For long-term brand value, yes — .com remains the default people type. .ai and .io are credible for tech products but require more spelling clarification.
How short does a domain need to be?
Under 12 characters is the working threshold. 6-10 is the sweet spot for new brands.
Should I avoid hyphens entirely?
Yes. Hyphenated domains get misspoken and are harder to type. The only exception is regional domains where hyphens are standard.
